Melrose Breaks & Holidays

This picturesque town of Melrose sits at the foot of the Eildon Hills next to the River Tweed and is known as the birthplace of the Rugby Sevens. The town itself is lovely, with lots of independent shops and coffee houses to explore. The ruins of Melrose Abbey sit within the town and are not to be missed by any history fans! Built in 1136, the abbey was destroyed by the English Army in 1385 but the ruins still stand today, decorated with unusual sculptures like hobgoblins and a bagpipe-playing pig! Outdoor enthusiasts will love exploring the surrounding areas, from the Tweed Forest Country Park to the landmark triple peaks of the Eildon Hills.

There are also two National Trust Scotland sites in the area: Priorwood, with its apple orchard and dried flower garden, and Harmony Gardens, which boasts magnificent views over the abbey and Eildon Hills. If you’re looking for a day in the city, Edinburgh sits only an hour’s drive away. Scotland’s capital city is laced with charming cobbled streets with history around every corner! For the bravest of visitors, ghost tours are a popular evening activity in Edinburgh, giving you the chance to explore the crypts, alleyways and graveyards that are said to be walked by spirits!
