Although Blackpool remains a popular destination all year round, in the autumn the Lancashire seaside resort comes alive with the biggest lights festival in the UK, the world-famous Blackpool Illuminations. This annual lighting extravaganza sees over one million light bulbs the display mixes traditional motifs with contemporary displays, to create a dazzling entertainment spectacle that stretches for six miles from Starr Gate to Bispham.
Blackpool Illuminations started as a small-scale decoration scheme with 10,000 lights to mark Blackpool’s first royal visit in 1912. So popular was the display that it was decided that the event should be staged every year to attract visitors to the resort after summer season.
Now part of British culture the Illuminations have grown into one of the UK’s biggest attractions and the largest free light show in the world, attracting over 3.5million visitors annually!
