Self Drive to Carlisle

The 2000-year-old border city of Carlisle is known for its long history and beautiful architecture. As the main shopping and commercial area in the northern half of Cumbria and a large portion of southern Scotland, there’s lots to see and do here! Enjoy shopping at its best in the Lanes Shopping Centre with over 70 stores under one roof, or the market hall for a traditional market treat.

In a city with a history spanning back to the Romans, you could wander through the dungeons and labyrinths at the 900-year-old Carlisle Castle, which boasts some amazing historic sites such as the turret where Mary Queen of Scots was held captive by Queen Elizabeth I. You could also explore Hadrian’s Wall, built by the Romans to protect England from rival tribes that lived in Scotland. It stretches 80 miles across the width of the UK and has been around for over 2,000 years. Carlisle has a great selection of restaurants and bars to visit, from Greek nights for live music to the Michelin-Star-rated Golden Fleece Inn – there’s something for everyone to enjoy!

n the areas surrounding Carlisle, Cumbria has lots to offer visitors. The northern Lake District is only around 45 minutes from Carlisle, offering stunning landscapes and a wide range of outdoor activities to try out.  You could also explore the nearby Solway Coast, a designated area of natural beauty with plenty of nature reserves, lovely hamlets and coastal paths to enjoy.
