Basingstoke, scenic view
Basingstoke, river view

An old market town dating back to Roman Times and appearing the Domesday Book, Basingstoke was relatively small until it expanded soon after World War II as a result of the London 'overspill'. Basingstoke is conveniently located just off the M3, half way between London and the South Coast.

From one of the area's best shopping centres, Festival Place, the excellent acoustics of The Anvil, and the Leisure Park offering swimming, bowling, cinema and ice skating, there's something for everyone alongside pavement cafes and restaurants. The surrounding countryside boasts a Tudor mansion previously owned by Henry VIII's Lord Chamberlain; The Vyne, where writer Jane Austen attended balls, and Stratfield Saye House, home to the family of the Great Duke of Wellington. Look out too for Highclere Castle, the setting for TV's Downton Abbey.
