The St Leger is the oldest and longest classic in the flat racing calendar and the pinnacle event at Doncaster Racecourse which attracts over 30,000 race-goers every year.
First run in 1776, the St Leger brings down the curtain on Doncaster’s most renowned festival and forms the final leg of the classic season, following the 2000 and 1000 Guineas at Newmarket in May and the Derby and Oaks at Epsom in June.
An old saying states that the fastest horse wins the Guineas, the luckiest takes glory at the Derby, but the best horse always wins the St Leger. With National Holidays you can see the very best horses battle it out for the £390,000 first prize.
Last year saw the race end controversially after Simple Verse was demoted to second behind Bondi Beach after a stewards enquiry but reinstated as winner two weeks later after a successful appeal.
It was the time a horse had won a British Classic after being disqualified and reinstated.
The Saturday showpiece also features notable races, including the Champagne Stakes and the fast and furious Portland Handicap. So place your bets and cheer them to the finishing post.
It doesn’t matter if you’re a racing nut or not to enjoy the St Leger. With an abundance of racing entertainment and an electric atmosphere to match, it’s a fantastic sporting event you will remember forever.
