The Grade 1 listed Blackpool Tower was opened to the public on 14th May 1894 and was inspired by the Eifel Tower in Paris. Blackpool's world famous illuminations take place from 29th August to 2nd November 2014 and feature over 1 million lamps in the display. Upto 30 staff including Electricians, Engineers, Joiners, Mechanics, Painters and Artists work all year round to ensure that the displays are ready in time to welcome the 3.5 million visitors throughout it's 73 nights. The illuminations have certainly come a long way since 100,000 people enjoyed the very first 'light show' back in 1879 which featured just 8 arc lamps!
